Syria weather is typically Mediterranean and is a direct result of the country’s geographical position. Obviously being predominantly Mediterranean, weather in Syria is blessed with long, hot arid summers and mild winters that boarder on wet. It should also be noted, that along with Mediterranean sea, the near by desert also has an immense influence on the patterns of Syria weather.
Syria weather is at its finest and most welcoming around the coastal regions of the country. Average daily temperatures during summer stand at a hot 29°C, dropping to a cooler, yet still balmy in comparison to Northern European locations, 10°C when winter sets in. In this part of the country, summers are hot and dry, the winters being mild and wet. Meanwhile, annual rainfall ranges between 750 to 1000m.
The further one ventures into the country’s inland area, the worst weather in Syria becomes, leaning towards drier and certainly less welcoming conditions. In the plateau region summers are extremely hot with mercury averaging around 35°C, while winters are significantly milder with a cool temperature average of 12°C. Annual rainfall ranged between 250mm to 500mm. Syria weather in the northern regions of the country’s interior is characterized by the prevailing cold of winter with temperatures often taking a nose dive to even bellow freezing point.
Understandably, conditions are at their absolute worst in the desert areas. To given an example, while summer temperatures in the area tend to hover around the 40°C, it’s not uncommon for mercury to soar to a sizzling 46 °C. Needless to say, precipitation in this region is virtually non existent. Both February and March are ravished by sandstorms that damage vegetation.
The vast steps of the plateau are situated in the northern part of the dessert, experiencing high daytime temperatures and skies without a hint of cloud almost throughout the whole of the summer season. In contrast, winters are characterized by frosts that quite often become severe and are most common between November and March.
Another distinct feature of Syria weather is the existence of a semiarid steppe zone that is situated between the Mediterranean coast and the dessert. In actual fact this area covers roughly around three fourths of the whole country, experiencing abundant amounts of rainfall (between 75 and 100 centimeters), most of the rain carried over by winds originating from the Mediterranean, the bulk of it falling between November and May. Average temperatures in the area range between 7.2° C in January to 26.6° C in August.
Summer weather in Syria is at its coolest in altitudes over 600m, while Damascus and Aleppo which is situated in the northwest, temperatures in August average roughly 30° C, dropping to a significantly cooler 4.4° C in January.
